Our employees, executive team and Board of Trustees members, dedicate their time and energy to supporting the mission of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Although there has been significant progress in treating this disease, there is still no cure and too many lives are cut far too short. The defective CF gene contains a slight abnormality called a mutation. Therefore, the test results may indicate a person who is a carrier of the CF gene is not a carrier. In people with CF, mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene cause the CFTR protein to not function properly.

In addition to providing grants for research into cystic fibrosis and supporting clinical trials, the foundation promotes and accredits 115 specialized centers for treatment of individuals with cystic fibrosis. We convened a committee of clinicians and people with CF to develop clinical care guidelines for pain and CF, which includes pain from disease complications, as well as certain medical procedures, tests, and treatments. Following a nationwide survey to learn about the needs of people with CF and how they receive care, we published journal articles with interim clinical guidance informed by the survey findings. This guidance provides considerations and best practices for CF care and the care team structure. Additional research is ongoing as we aim to support individualized care. Funding and supporting trials conducted in the Cystic Fibrosis Therapeutics Development Network, the largest CF clinical trials network in the world. To make meaningful progress against infections, we established the five-year Infection Research Initiative to help improve the detection, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of infections.

The 16th century oak barn is a huge open plan area for feasting, socialising around the woodburner and sleeping, with adjoining 17th century cartlodge with further bedrooms and a large kitchen well-equipped and underfloor-heated kitchen. At the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, we commit to equity, racial justice, diversity, and inclusion as core principles guiding our efforts to provide all people with CF the opportunity to live long, fulfilling lives. The types of symptoms and how severe they are can differ widely from person to person. Many factors can affect a person’s health and the course the disease runs, including your age when you are diagnosed. There are close to 40,000 children and adults living with cystic fibrosis in the United States and an estimated 105,000 people have been diagnosed with CF across 94 countries.

This approval enables approximately 300 people with CF in the U.S. to access a treatment for the underlying cause of their disease for the first time. We are investing up to an additional $8.5 million in SpliSense for its Phase 2 trial of a type of genetic therapy for certain CF splicing mutations. It is a sponsored walk akin to Race for the Cure, where participants walk 10 kilometers (6.2 mi) to raise money to support research for cystic fibrosis. There are Great Strides walks in over 560 locations throughout the country. Great Strides has succeeded in raising over $180,000,000 for cystic fibrosis research. In 1989, scientists working for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation discovered the gene that causes cystic fibrosis, considered the key to developing a cure for cystic fibrosis. This legislation, as well as efforts to ban co-pay accumulator practices in the states, would potentially reduce the financial burden that results from complex and hard-to-navigate health insurance plans. At March on the Hill and Teen Advocacy Day, a combined more than 400 teens and adults, some who have cystic fibrosis, gathered on Capitol Hill or participated in virtual meetings with their representatives and legislative staff.

To advance drug development and a search for a cure, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) has contracts with several companies to help fund the development of potential treatments and/or cures for cystic fibrosis. Resulting revenue received by CFF is used in support of our mission.

We’re committed to developing a transformative treatment – and ultimately, a cure – for all people with cystic fibrosis. The Foundation’s steadfast commitment to advancing CF research has helped enable more than a dozen new treatments for the disease. We have made incredible progress, including the approvals by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of Kalydeco (ivacaftor), Orkambi  (lumacaftor/ivacaftor), Symdeko (tezacaftor/ivacaftor), Trikafta (elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor), Cayston (aztreonam), and TOBI (tobramycin). As Chief Investment Officer, Skenderasi will oversee the Foundation’s investment strategy and manage resources to ensure the Foundation is well positioned to pursue its mission.

From 2018 through 2023, we invested more than $170 million to fund research and the development of new treatments. We also conducted a comprehensive review of our research portfolio, identifying and filling gaps, evaluating our investments, and recalibrating our infection research strategy. This initiative helped us set the agenda going forward for a robust infection research program so that we can continue to meet the needs of the CF community.
